I'm currently sitting at work and not doing any work (it's been a busy day at the print lab so far) and I wish I had a sandwich from cafe doris. Here's my second assignment from intermediate photo: altered lanscapes!!!!!

the scans are miserable because they are from prints rather than negatives. my new camera rules though!

it's been long enough, I suppose. second semester has been ridiculously busy. between applying to study abroad, getting a job at print tech, getting ready to apply for internships for the summer, and lots of new projects with psychic friends, it feels like I barely have time to get my school work done.
this is my first assignment for type 2 with Dan Gaidula. we were given a body of text and asked to create 32 unique layouts for the text. I struggled with this project the entire time, from the first set of layouts (mine ended up all looking more or less the same) to printing on the wrong side of the paper (hence the slightly yellow hue to some of the pages, couldn't fix it completely in photoshop), to maybe breaking my sewing machine by sewing through stiff bookcloth (sorry mom!). But I'm pleased with the final result and it was well worth the effort.

my 6th type 1 assignment, as well as my final for that class was to create a "biographical list" of 400 items and then create a poster to display said list. my list was actually a pre-made list I got from my last.fm page of my top 400 most listened-to musical artists. I knew that I wanted to work with scale and transparency to create hierarchy, but I struggled with creating the shape. in the end, I kind of created a map of my musical tastes, allowing associations I've made (whether they be through similar band members, styles or time period in which I was a fan of that band/artist) to create a system I could use to organize this massive amount of information. I'm pleased with the final product, moreso when printed than digital, but if I had another week or four, I'd probably still be tweeking alignments and opacities.

elements of visual thinking: scale

sorry, this isn't my type final, as I had promised, but I found myself searching through the clusterfuck that is my back up harddrive and I came across this project from freshman year. elements of visual thinking was a required class for foundation year and I'm glad it was, sometimes I miss taking a class where (almost) anything goes.

like this cardboard city I made for that class. (I got away with some of the most absurd stuff in that class) this particular assignment's prompt was simply "scale", the responses were very diverse (from 12 foot filbert paintbrushes to a replica of the world small enough to fit in the palm of your hand). in my response, I aimed to scale down and then scale up by first creating a miniature cityscape for my classmates to walk through and interact with. Then, using my laptop's built-in camera, a projector, and a bit of IM magic courtesy of anthony mattox, I projected live video of the city on the opposing wall, so people could watch themselves walk through the "city" on a larger-than-(real)-life scale in real time.

my fifth assignment in type 1 was the first assignment that introduced a hierarchy that would function on both the functional and aesthetic level. it's a book of five fonts, chosen by me. each page includes the name of the font, examples of each letter, and a brief description/history. I chose the following fonts, two serifs, two sans serifs, and a slab serif because I think they are beautiful and diverse examples of good typography and fonts I often choose to work with.

this was our fourth assignment, it was called "five squares, ten inches" simply because we had to create 5 squares of perfectly justified text and arrange them in a 10 x 10 square. if I could go back, there are a few small things I'd change about my final iteration of the assignment, but overall, I'm happy with the depth of field and various textures I achieved. I even managed to make overlapping text look good!

as a sophomore gd major, I was required to take type 1 this past semester. the projects progressed from simple abstractions of single letterforms to creating a complex visual hierarchy, all while focusing on basic visual principles such as texture, depth of field, and balance (believe it or not, those all can be achieved or severely butchered through blocks of text). over the next few entries, I'll post some of the assignments we had.

this was our third assignment, creating pattern from a single letterform. I created many versions of some of these patterns, but I think these were some of my most successful ones:

we were allowed to mess with color for the second part of this assignment. when I exported these pdf's the colors got really messed up, imagine this one being a little less vivid. also, I enjoyed playing with opacities and the interactions of the letters.
